Does Audible Delete or Remove Book Titles? (Checked)

Audible is a great place to get audiobooks, and they have a huge selection of new releases, classics and bestsellers.

While it’s not free, you can get a lot of value out of the service if you use it right.

But how much does Audible delete or remove book titles? There are some people who think that Audible deletes or removes books from their catalogs once they’ve been removed from the Kindle store. But is that true? And if so, how long do they keep them available for purchase?

In this post, I’ll share my findings on this topic and answer these questions.

Here’s If Audible Deletes or Removes Book Titles:

Audible does not delete book titles from your library. You can always find a title you’ve purchased in the platform even if it’s been removed from the catalog. If you want to remove a title because of personal reasons, you can do so by deleting it from your library.

Why Are Some Books No Longer Available on Audible?

If you’ve purchased a book from Audible in the past, you may find that it’s no longer available for sale.

This usually means that the publisher has stopped offering it through Audible—either because they’ve decided to sell it through another distributor or they’ve decided not to sell e-books at all.

Audible doesn’t offer any official reasoning for removing a title from its catalog. However, there are a few reasons why a book might be taken off the service:

  • The publisher might have decided not to renew their contract with Amazon or Audible — either because they didn’t like how much money they were making from audiobook sales or because they wanted to use their own service instead (for example, Penguin Random House Audio).
  • The publisher may have decided that the cost of producing an audiobook was too high for them (or for their authors) when compared with the revenue it would generate. This can happen if there aren’t enough sales of an audiobook; if there are too many returns, etc.

Other reasons include:

  • A licensing issue (for example, if the publisher doesn’t want their audiobook sold outside of certain countries)
  • An author who wants to control distribution of their book themselves and not through an audio platform like Audible
  • A publisher or author who doesn’t want their audiobook to be sold on a subscription service like Audible

How Long Are Books Available on Audible?

Audible titles are available for sale as long as there are enough subscribers to keep them in circulation.

If a title isn’t being downloaded often enough, Audible may remove it from their catalog.

This happens most often with older books that were popular in their day but aren’t available elsewhere now — but sometimes newer books get removed if they don’t sell well enough.

Will Audible Remove Titles That Aren’t Being Downloaded Much?

The answer is “it depends.” Some titles are no longer available because they’ve been out-of-print for a while — but others have been discontinued by Audible itself because they didn’t sell well enough to keep them in circulation.

Can Authors Choose to Remove a Book from Audible?

The short answer is yes, but it’s not as simple as it seems.

As a self-published author, you can choose to remove your book from the Audible store at any time.

However, if you do this before your book has been published for 90 days or more, you will lose all royalties from sales during this time period. You’ll also lose all of the pre-sales that have been made up until that point.

If you’re concerned about losing money in this way, it’s best to wait until 90 days after your book has been published before removing it from the Audible store.

The author or publisher can remove a title from Audible, but it is not an easy process and there are some caveats:

  • The first thing you need to know is that if your book is enrolled in the Kindle Unlimited program (KDP Select) or the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library (KOLL), you cannot remove it from Audible until after your enrollment period ends. That’s because Amazon doesn’t want users to be able to take advantage of your book being available on Audible, only to remove it after they’ve purchased it.
  • If you don’t want your book on Audible because it’s not selling well or you want to focus more on other platforms, then go ahead and remove it from the service yourself. But if you want to keep your audio rights with Amazon (and thus avoid having another narrator record your book), then remove it only after your enrollment period ends.

Can Audible Remove a Book Title That You’ve Purchased?

Yes, Audible can remove a book title that you’ve purchased. However, they will not be able to refund you or give you credit for the purchase. If you no longer want to listen to your audiobook, it is best to return it using the return policy that is outlined on their website.

If you have any questions regarding this process, feel free to contact their customer service department.

Can You Delete an Audiobook from Your Audible Library?

Sometimes you may want to remove a title from your library. Maybe it’s because you no longer like it, or maybe you want to save space on your device. Whatever the reason, removing titles is easy to do.

To remove a title from your library, follow these steps:

  • Open the Audible app on your mobile device and tap Library in the menu at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap the title you want to remove.
  • Tap Remove from My Library at the top of the screen.
  • Tap OK on the pop-up window that appears asking if you’re sure about deleting the title from your library.

If you’re not sure what kind of book you want to buy, Audible offers recommendations based on the types of books that other people who enjoy similar styles have enjoyed listening to before.

But what if you want a certain book removed from your list?

Audible does not delete any book titles from its system unless you ask them to do so.

Does Audible Change the Selection of Books Based on My Location?

Yes, Audible uses location information to customize your experience. But it does not limit your choices based on the location.

Audible tracks your location and then makes suggestions based on its findings. If you’re in a specific area, it will make book recommendations based on that area.

For example, if you’re visiting New York City and want to listen to books about New York City, Audible will show you books based on this criteria. You can also see what other people are listening to in that location or state by looking at their profiles.

The Audible app has a location feature that allows you to browse and buy books based on your current location.

The app will ask for permission to use your location data when you first open it, so if you haven’t given it permission yet, make sure to do so before proceeding.

Once you’ve enabled location tracking in the settings of your device or app, go back into the Audible app and browse audiobooks.

You’ll see that some of them have “Available at…” or “In Stock Now” next to their titles. This means that they are available for purchase at a nearby store.

What Happens When a Book Is Updated to a New Version?

When a book is updated on Audible, the new version is released. The old version of the book will remain available to you, but it will no longer receive any new content or updates.

When a new version is released, it will automatically be downloaded to your device and you’ll see notifications in the app. You can also check for new versions by going to “My Library” and tapping “My Books”.

You can choose whether or not to download a new version of an Audible book. If you don’t download it, you’ll continue to have access to the previously purchased version of that book.

When a new version is released, it will appear in the “New & Updated” section of your library and you’ll be able to download it for free. This happens automatically; you don’t need to do anything.

If you’ve previously purchased a book and want to get the new version for free, just go into your library and click “Download” on the updated edition.

Fortunately, Audible doesn’t delete books from its library. The company does this because it wants to offer customers a wide range of titles from which they can choose. If you’ve ever tried listening to an audiobook that has been removed from the Amazon catalog, then you know how frustrating it can be to find something available that isn’t too old or too new.

Audible also keeps its library up-to-date with current releases so that customers don’t have trouble finding something new and exciting to listen to. While you may not be able to get rid of titles already in your collection, there’s nothing wrong with making sure that your account is current by downloading new books regularly.
