Step 2: Make Sure That Your Microphone Is Not Muted.
Check that your microphone is not muted:
- Click the microphone icon in the left corner of the meeting window to see if you’re muted (the icon will be red with a line through it, like this: ). If you are muted, click the icon to unmute yourself, then speak into your mic.
- Go to Settings and check that mute isn’t selected there during the meeting. If it is selected, click it again to unselect it and unmute yourself.
- If your computer has a built-in microphone (or if you have an external USB-connected mic), make sure your mic is enabled by opening Windows Settings and selecting Privacy > Microphone or using these steps: Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Recording Tab > Right-click on Microphone > Select Enable.
In Google Chrome, make sure that “Ask when a site requires access to your camera and microphone (recommended)” is selected under Content settings.
Step 3: Check Your Meeting Settings.
The microphone might be turned off in the show more settings area. To check, follow these steps:
- Open Google Meet and click Start a new meeting.
- Click the three dots on the right side of your screen to open the show more settings menu and click Settings.
- Confirm that your camera, microphone, and chat are all turned on by checking that they’re set to “On.” If they aren’t, change them by clicking each one, then choose On or Off from the drop-down menu to adjust them as needed. Once you’ve changed any of these settings here, they’ll stay enabled or disabled for every Google Meet call you to make in the future until you change them again here in this setting window (you can also turn them on and off during a call by clicking their respective buttons at the bottom of your screen).
Step 4: Check The Google Chrome Settings For Your Microphone.
You can check whether your microphone is set to access in Google Meet by following these steps:
- In the top right corner of the screen, click the three dots (see screenshot above).
- Click “Settings.”
- Scroll down to “Privacy and Security” and click “Site Settings.” (See screenshot below.)
- Find “Microphone” and ensure that it is not set to ask before accessing. If it is, you will need to disable this setting before attempting to use your microphone in a Meet session again. By clicking on the slider next to “Ask before accessing.” Make sure that it turns grey, like in the screenshot below.
Step 5: Check Your Router For Network Issues.
If your router is not connected to the Internet, it will cause your Google Meet call problems. To check that this isn’t the source of the problem, try opening a page in your web browser.
The router may also be in sleep mode and is unaware that you need it to wake up. Turn off your computer and leave all other devices unplugged for one minute to fix this.
Then start your computer again and see if this resolves the problem—if not, try turning on one device at a time until Google Meet starts working correctly.
Lastly, make sure that there are no obstructions between your computer and the router (e.g., walls). If there are too many walls between them or too far away from each other, it might cause connectivity issues to occur more often than desired, so move closer together!
Step 6: Test Your Mic Before Joining A Call.
Using the Google Meet test call, you can test your microphone before joining a call or meeting. Here’s how:
- In the top right corner, click Settings.
- At the bottom of the page, click Test speaker and mic.
- Click Call now.
- Check if you can hear a sound from your microphone by speaking into it. If you hear the sound, finish your call or meeting and let everyone know that you’ve resolved this issue. If you don’t hear anything, follow the above steps again. If you still have problems and no one hears you after following all of these steps, check your computer’s microphone settings to make sure that it is turned on and configured correctly.
