Audible is a great service if you’re looking for a convenient way to collect and listen to Audiobooks on demand.
But what if English isn’t your first language, and you want to listen to books in your native language, too? Or, perhaps just don’t live in the U.S. and want to know if Audible will even work for you in your home country.
Well, if any of these are true for you, keep reading because we’re going to take a look at Audible region marketplaces and how they work.
Here’s How Audible Works in Different Countries:
Audible is fully owned by Amazon.com, a U.S. company, and it mainly features English-language audiobooks. However, audiobooks in other languages do exist on the service. Audible provides several sub-sites to Audible.com, known as “marketplaces,” which each cater to a specific country or region.
Does Audible Have Titles in Other Languages?
The vast majority of Audiobooks available through Audible are in English.
However, Audible has a small but growing collection of titles in other languages. These include both translations of English-language works as well as original works written in their native tongue.
In addition to English, Audible features audiobooks in German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, and Russian.
This may not be an exhaustive list, but these are the main languages we were able to find in our research.
It’s also not clear if the Chinese-language audiobooks are available in Mandarin or Cantonese or perhaps a mix of both.
Audible also features many language-learning audiobooks geared primarily toward English-speaking listeners who want to learn additional languages.
Audible’s language-learning titles can help you learn to understand and speak Hebrew, Arabic, French, Spanish, Russian, Polish, Portuguese, English, German, Greek, and more.
What are Audible’s Marketplaces?
Audible also features several sub-sites called “marketplaces” which each cater to a specific country or region and feature more books in the native language(s) of said country or region.
The default U.S.-based site is ‘Audible.com’, and other marketplaces replace the ‘.com’ domain extension with a unique suffix for that marketplace.
For example, the Canadian marketplace can be found at “Audible.ca”.
The default “Audible.com” marketplace also serves as a catch-all marketplace for any countries that lack their own dedicated marketplace, though it is predominantly in American English.
Do note, however, that simply visiting these marketplaces by typing in the correct address in your browser will not necessarily allow you access to their content.
This is because, even if you have a valid Audible account, it will only be recognized by the marketplace site for the region you signed up in.
Unfortunately, this means you can be region-locked out of any content that is available in other marketplaces but not your own.
In theory, it is possible to switch your marketplace in your account, but doing so requires a mailing address and a credit card issued in the country/region you’re trying to access. It’s worth noting that there are other factors regarding region-locked Audible content such as the licensing laws in different countries.
A workaround does exist to bypass the region-locked restriction. However, we cannot recommend using it, as the legality is a bit fuzzy, and it may or may not violate Audible’s terms of service, but it has been confirmed as working in 2022.
For the workaround, save your credit card information under a fake address in another country and then use your credits to buy region-locked content from that country’s marketplace.
You will not need a VPN, but you will need a valid postal code from the country in question.
Again, we cannot recommend using this workaround, and you do so at your own risk.
