How Many Playlists Can You Have On Spotify? (We Checked)

Spotify gives you a lot of freedom in how much you can stream, download, and make playlists out of music.

But just what are the limits, exactly? Is there a maximum number of playlists you can make on a free account? What about a premium account?

If you want answers to these questions, then keep reading, because that’s exactly what we’re going to find out today!

Here’s How Playlists on Spotify Work:

There is no limit on the number of playlists one can make on a Spotify account of any variety. Free accounts are limited to 10,000 songs per playlist. Premium accounts may share this limit, or may be unlimited; sources conflict. Premium accounts may download up to 10,000 songs on up to five devices.

How Many Playlists Can You Have on a FREE Spotify Account?

As many as you want!

This was not always the case, but as far as we can tell, today in 2023, there is no limit on the number of playlists you can make, on any kind of account.

There are limits on how many songs you can put in a single playlist, but more on that later.

As for the number of playlists you can create, there does not appear to be any limit.

How Many Playlists Can You DOWNLOAD on Spotify?

Well, that depends on a few things.

  • Firstly, it depends on whether you have a Spotify free account or a premium account.
  • Secondly, it depends on how big your playlists are.
  • Finally, it depends on how much storage space you have available.

If you have a free account, the answer is zero; free users can only download podcasts, and cannot download music of any kind.

However, if you have a Premium account, then the answer depends on just how many songs are in each of your playlists and how much storage space you have.

There is a limit on how much you can download with a Spotify Premium account, but it’s measured in songs, not playlists.

As a Premium user, you can download up to a total of 10,000 songs across up to 5 different devices; that is if you have room for them.

Since we’re talking downloads here, a major limiting factor is how much physical storage space you actually have on your device(s).

After all, it doesn’t matter how many songs Spotify lets you download if you don’t actually have room for them.

But assuming for the moment that you have storage space to spare, the maximum limit for downloads is 10,000 songs.

So, how many playlists you can download then depends entirely on how many songs are in each playlist.

  • If you crammed 10,000 songs into a single playlist, then you can download one playlist.
  • If you put 1,000 songs in each playlist, you can download 10 playlists.
  • If you put 100 songs in each playlist, you can download 100 playlists.

And so on, and so forth.

How Big Can Each Playlist Be?

For Free users, the maximum playlist size is 10,000 songs.

For Premium users, the limit may be the same, or it may be entirely unlimited; we were unable to verify for sure.

This is because multiple sources posit conflicting claims on the matter.

We’ve seen some claim that 10,000 is the maximum playlist size for ALL users, and others claim it only applies to free users.

One thing’s for sure though: it doesn’t really matter, because for most people 10,000 songs are probably way too many for a single playlist anyway.

So with such a massive upper limit, you can consider the amount effectively unlimited.

How Many Playlists Do People Normally Have?

This is an impossible question to answer because it’s inherently personal and will vary wildly from one user to another.

Some people have zero playlists; they come to Spotify to listen to a certain song or album and never feel the need to rearrange their favorites into a playlist.

Others may have hundreds of playlists, and create a dozen more on a whim.

And everything in between; each individual user’s relationship with the playlist-creation feature is as unique as that person.

How Many Playlists Are There on Spotify?

There are over 80 million songs on Spotify.

But what about the total number of playlists people have created?

Apparently over 4 billion. Yes, 4 billion.

There are also over 3,000 official Spotify-created playlists, but that’s not nearly as impressive a figure.

Going back to the far more interesting 4 billion statistic though, this means that there are several times more playlists on Spotify than there are songs.

So by all means, keep making playlists out of your favorite music, and keep reaching toward infinity.
