Can Hootsuite Manage A Website? (Quick Answers)

Hootsuite is a social media management tool that lets you oversee and manage many of your digital accounts.

You can schedule posts, upload drafts for approval, and save media for future use.

Hootsuite is best known for managing social media profiles like Facebook and Twitter. But can it handle an entire website?

Here is the Short Answer to if Hootsuite Can Manage a Website:

Hootsuite can manage a website—with limitations. Hootsuite is limited to managing self-hosted WordPress websites only. It must be a WordPress.org, self-hosted website—not a WordPress.com blog site. With a self-hosted WordPress site, you can publish and monitor your site’s content via Hootsuite.

Do People Typically Use Hootsuite to Manage Websites?

Hootsuite is not usually used to manage websites.

People don’t typically use Hootsuite to manage websites due to the limited CMS that can integrate with Hootsuite.

There is only one CMS that works with Hootsuite, and that is WordPress.

What is a CMS?

A CMS, or a Content Management System, is software that lets you oversee the handling of your digital content securely. Basically, a CMS allows users to create and manage websites.

There are three kinds of commonly used CMS.

The first CMS is the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system. These systems are generally used to host content that you’ve uploaded for drafting or for collaboration. They are used for managing and storing media and documents.

Cloud storage services like Dropbox and Google Drive are sometimes considered DAM systems, however, they are not built to be used by large companies as the sole DAM system. Services like Dropbox and Google Drive are more likely to be used by individuals or small teams as a DAM system.

DAM systems built for larger companies include services like Brandfolder, Bynder, and others. These options offer customizable platforms, more storage space, templates, and lots of other features.

The second CMS is the Enterprise Management System, or EMS.

EMS usually involves synthesizing databases and creating collaborative workflow management across a business. A good example of this is Salesforce, which helps multiple teams from various departments work together to manage customer relationships.

The third CMS is the Website CMS. A website CMS focuses on the management of all assets of a website. These include photos, videos, and text. WordPress is a Website CMS.

Note that the different kinds of CMS can sometimes overlap with each other. A site can be categorized as multiple CMS systems.

Can I Use Hootsuite to Post to My CMS?

You can use Hootsuite to post to your CMS website if it is a self-hosted WordPress website—or if it is Hootsuite itself.

Hootsuite can post to its own CMS. You can create posts and upload photos to the media library of your Hootsuite Dashboard and grab these images when you need them for social media posting.

The second CMS that Hootsuite can post to is WordPress. You can create new posts or add images to your self-hosted WordPress website.

Does Hootsuite Integrate into WordPress, etc.?

Hootsuite allows you to integrate with two websites: WordPress and Disqus.

Hootsuite allows you to manage your self-hosted Website through the Hootsuite Dashboard.

A self-hosted WordPress website means websites made using the WordPress CMS—not those simply hosted on WordPress.com. Personal blogs, such as those with URLs like username[dot]wordpress[dot]com are not compatible with Hootsuite.

Also, the WordPress integration only supports self-hosted sites running WordPress version 3.4 and above, and your Website must be XML-RPC enabled.

Meanwhile, Disqus is another website management tool that you can add to Hootsuite. It lets you reply, moderate, or delete comments on a website that has the Disqus comment plug-in.

What Are the Limitations of Hootsuite in Website Management?

When it comes to website management, Hootsuite does the job, but it has a lot of limitations—mainly that you can only manage self-hosted WordPress sites.

If you run a WordPress blog that is not self-hosted or a website that uses custom CMS such as Joomla, Drupal, Weebly, it will not integrate with Hootsuite.

Note that WordPress integration requires you to install it from the Hootsuite app directory.

Should I Use Hootsuite to Manage My Website?

If you have a self-hosted WordPress site you can, but you don’t have to.

Hootsuite is designed to give users a single interface to control your various social media accounts. And if you have a self-hosted WordPress site, you can add your site to your Hootsuite account and manage your social media accounts and website in one place.

If you run a website that uses WordPress, then, by all means, go ahead and use it.

But you should also remember that there is the possibility of losing support later on. The current WordPress integration was made by a third-party developer certified by Hootsuite. That means that if WordPress makes any changes and the developer decides not to update, you may lose the link between Hootsuite and WordPress.

While every user of WordPress on Hootsuite hopes for long-term support, it pays to be aware of possible realities that may happen in the future.

Even with the limitations of Hootsuite, when it comes to self-hosted WordPress website management, it has some great perks:

What Is Hootsuite Built for?

Hootsuite was made primarily for managing social media content.

It was designed to manage different Twitter accounts, and it later expanded to include the management of Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest.

With Hootsuite, you can upload and schedule your posts on different social media accounts. It also features a calendar that lets you plan content and identify gaps in your publishing schedule.

Hootsuite also lets you view the analytics of your social media profiles to give you an idea of how many people have seen and engaged with your business online.

Hootsuite also offers add-ons like insights and employee empowerment tools.

Are there Other Social Media Tools that Integrate with Website CMS?

There are other social media tools that integrate with website CMS.

Salesforce offers CMS tools that help you manage e-commerce websites and integrate with Shopify. Check out our article about Hootsuite’s comparison and compatibility with Salesforce here.
